Working to help kids and families embrace healthy habits that can become a lifelong practice, YMCA Camp Elphinstone joins with the YMCA of Greater Vancouver to celebrate National YMCA Healthy Kids Day on June 2 at the campsite from 10am to 3pm. This free community event will focus on fun and engaging activities, practical information and simple ways to be healthier in spirit, mind and body.

Activities include free active programs for children and youth, canoeing, archery, kayaking, high ropes, crafts, a healthy lunch, and a girls’ athletic clothing fundraiser (clothing donated by Canadian retailer).

In 2012 alone, the YMCA helped over 96,800 children, youth, adults, families and seniors become stronger through life-enhancing programs and services.

Ferry shuttles are available from Langdale terminal and buses will run from Halfmoon Bay, Sechelt, Roberts Creek and Gibsons; e-mail to reserve at camp.elphinstone@vanym

Across Canada, most children do not meet recommended levels of daily physical activity. Rising rates of obesity and related chronic disease tell us that getting kids active should be a top priority for parents, schools, and all Canadians.  “Our children’s health is very important to us. Our aim is to show families, children and youth that making healthy choices can be fun and easy—especially at YMCA camps!” says Lisa Stiver, General Manager of Camping and Youth Engagement for the YMCA of Greater Vancouver. She added, “we hope the children and families who attend this event will share what they learn with their friends and other family members so that the whole community can be active together.”
