The Gibsons and District Public Library is delighted to welcome our new Children’s Librarian Danielle Arsenault and Summer Reading Program Assistant Kathleen Sheehy. Now that summer is upon us, Danielle and Kathleen are working hard getting ready for our fun annual Summer Reading Program.
The objective of the summer reading program is to encourage children to read for pleasure during their time away from school, and to offer a free weekly program that includes art, outdoor and theatre games, reading incentive activities, and special guests. This weekly Wednesday program begins July 2 and runs until August 13. Children ages 5 to 7 meet from 10:30 to noon, and 8 to 10 year olds meet from 1:30 to 3:00. We will also be offering a youth bookclub for ages 11 to 15 on Thursdays at 1:30: great books, food and lively conversation. Call the library to sign up for these fabulous free programs at 604-886-2130.
The warm, unscheduled days of summer are a perfect time for children and youth to discover their personal preferences for reading, and explore the boundless worlds that books can take them to. Summer reading also results in better academic performances during the school year as it keeps our brains sharp and nourished.
There islots happening for all ages at the library over the summer. Upcoming June Events include Computer Training, Conversational Spanwish and French, the GDPL book club discussion of Lucky by Kathryn Para on Wednesday, June 11 with the author in attendance, Jazz with Martini Madness on Saturday, June 14 and the book launch of Kapusta or Cabbage: a mother and daughter culinary journey on Wednesday, June 25.
