Fans of Middle Ages gather in Gibsons

Oyez, Oyez! The Gibsons Curling Club will be transformed on Saturday, May 3 as the Coast’s first medieval fair hosts members of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). Travelling from across BC and the western United States, fans of the Middle Ages will gather in costume to recreate that period in history not as it was, but as it should have been. Hosted by the Sunshine Coast chapter or shire, known as Fjordland, the event features period costumes, arts and crafts, and displays of martial arts in full armour. Prizes for archery and swordsmanship include a beautifully-crafted and fully functional rapier from the workshop of metal artist William Christianson, an elegant helmet, and a hand-tooled leather quiver. All are welcome to attend and discover a different world as they step back a few hundred years through the Curling Club’s doors. Doors open at 8 a.m. with events continuing through the day.
