Following on the success of its sold-out Girls and Coding workshop in November, the Sunshine Coast Tech Hub and Capilano University are hosting a second coding workshop for girls aged 8 to 12, led by women who work in the tech sector.
Lisa Bains, a web developer who taught at the fall workshop, points out that the tech industry is predominantly male. “Fewer women choose careers in tech and we know that the decision to avoid the sciences happens at a young age,” said Bains.
“It’s important for girls to learn to code so they feel empowered to build with digital technology, not just be passive consumers of it. I want to show girls that they can use software to express themselves creatively – which is super fun – and also solve important problems.”
The workshop, to be held on Saturday, April 29 from 1 to 4pm at the Capilano University computer lab, is aimed at girls who have some basic knowledge of the Scratch programming language. Girls can learn enough Scratch to participate in this workshop by working through the exercises in Stages 1 to 8 at the code.org website. (http://studio.code.org/s/course2)
Parents may participate, but must bring a laptop or tablet device. Computers will be provided for the girls.
Fees are $20 for girls, free for parents. Registration is available from share-there.com, or inquiries can be sent to glc@sctechhub.ca. Registration is limited to 24 girls.
