Summertime at the library

Sitting on the deck of the Gibsons Public Library looking out at the stunning view of the harbour and the mountains is a special summertime experience. The library is bustling this time of year with people looking for the perfect book to read at the beach, or an audiobook to enjoy during a road trip or many of the other boundless resources the library offers. Summer is a special time for young folks at the library as we host a wide range of programs for all ages. From coding to puppet making to the Wild Wednesday summer reading program –  there is something for youth of all ages.  Our Claymation Commotion program in August is filling up fast, so check out the library website to register for this special offering.

One of the most heartwarming moments this month was the Teddy Bear Sleepover. This magical program invited children to drop off their teddy bears or other stuffed creatures to enjoy a night at the library getting up to mischief and fun. Library staff then took pictures of the stuffies having their sleepover fun: playing hide and seek, reading each other stories, playing on the computers and sneaking treats. The next day when the children returned to the library to pick up their stuffed friends, they were full of awe and wonder to see the pictures, and created beautiful story books with their own words and the photos to have as a keepsake. There will be another Teddy Bear sleepover Aug. 1 & 2.

The wonder and rich imagination that resulted from this program is symbolic of why the library is such a special place. Everyone is welcome here, and our space, staff and resources serve as a gateway to an enriched life robust with creative and critical thinking. Please check out our website at to see the calendar of upcoming events, to search the catalogue or to enjoy one of our many interesting databases. See you at the library.
